Protected Areas: Preserving Our Future

Elementary, Middle

Description

Protected Areas: Preserving Our Future explores the concepts, values and practices that underlie the idea of protected areas, such as parks and ecological reserves, by considering what we protect as individuals, why we protect certain things and places, and how we go about doing it. The resource starts by investigating what protection means, considers why we protect as it relates to what we value, and then delves into the decision making process necessary to bring something under protection.

The lessons are varied and use many cooperative and group techniques to actively involve students in the content and process. It clearly integrates skills of language arts, social studies and science. The opportunities for extensions and enrichment are endless; numerous suggestions are given, complete with contact links for further background information.

This is a very comprehensive document detailing in 15 lessons the parameters used when distinguishing areas to be protected, especially as parks. The resource is designed so that it can be implemented at three levels of inquiry:

·     a four hour introduction

·     a seven lesson "highlights tour"

·     a 10-activity in-depth look at protected areas
