Global Groundwork Resource Kit-Food and Agriculture

Middle

Description

These four lessons are designed to provide global education specific to food and agriculture.  They could be used separately.

  • Lesson One - The investigation begins with a real or virtual visit to a canola farm where students observe and catalog insects.  The next day they create, compare and contrast food-webs of insects in a mono-crop ecosystem with those found in a naturally-occurring ecosystem. Insecticide application is then introduced and students answer synthesis type questions specific to pesticide use
  • Lesson Two - Students are divided into groups that proportionately represent current continental populations. They elect a leader who then competes for a share of world food as represented by a pile of one hundred candies. The food is not divided equally within the group but instead is distributed according to current  global practice. Ratios of food to people are calculated and students then redistribute the food fairly and enjoy the treat.
  • Lesson Three - Students read information on population migration and slums found in the resource kit. In the lab, they use a provided web address to collect and categorize information on world slums. They are then required to write an essay comparing living conditions in their own communities with those found in the locations they researched.
  • Lesson Four - Students identify alien species of plants in Canada. Working in small groups, students create lists of precautionary practices to help avoid the problems resulting from the introduction of non-native species.
