- Class room set of reliable, properly-stored* magnetic compasses, (Silva/Brunton 7DNL, or Suunto A-10NH base-plate type ). Butcher paper, surveyor’s type (15 Metre) measuring tape. Gridded paper, such as easel-sized 2cm grid paper would help for explanations, graph paper in 8x11 size with binder rings for students to map on.
- The standard for North of 60 outdoor recreation programmes is the Suunto MC-2G, available for $68 from MEC, with declination adjustment, luminous points and a gymballed global needle that will work in areas closer to the magnetic North Pole where regular compasses will not work.
- For Southern Canada, where a gymballed needle is not needed, equivalents are the Silva Type 15 Ranger or Brunton Safari 16DLU, luminous baseplate compasses, with declination available at MEC.ca for roughly $33.
- Topographic maps or city plan maps of the local school.
- *Magnetic compasses must be stored roughly 15cm apart from each other; typical solutions are a series of hooks nailed into a wall, or cut slots in the lid of a cardboard box, or cut slots in a slab of old foam from a sofa/chesterfield cushion.

Description
This is an on-line printable resource on basic map making for strong senior elementary school classes and many secondary classes. Particularly relevant for First Nation's communities where modern land claims put a huge demand on mapping skills within the community.
It must be printed off for use.
Students will draw scaled maps of their surroundings using basic map and compass techniques to produce maps uniquely relevant to their perspectives and their lives. Implicitly they will be exposed to mathematical concepts such as grids, scale, angles/bearings, and other charting/mapping concepts in a very painless manner.
General Assessment
Strengths
- Nice light humorous language is used throughout, with a sort of disarming informality.
- Support for new teachers could be better.
- Package is largely up to date.
Weaknesses
- The lack of safe school green spaces is a much broader problem than this resource should have to deal with.
- Read as an on-line PDF file, the format in 2 columns demands up and down scrolling twice for each page, something that less able students will find difficult, as such this should be considered a project to download and print off for students and not as a student-accessible on-line resource.
- If it is to be used outside it is best that it be printed out in binder pages which can then be detached and put into zipper-lock type plastic bags to keep the pages from getting destroyed outside; richer schools may be able to blow the pages up to 11x17 size and then laminate them, displaying them on a easel or pegged down with stones out on the land.
- Assessment tools are lacking.
To enhance this resource the following changes are strongly recommended:
- Part I of the lesson refers to First Nation's land use with the rather passé phrase 'Natives'; worse, First Nations land use is referred to using the past tense, as if First Nation's traditional use of lands no longer exists!
To enhance this resource the following changes would be beneficial:
- Unfortunately, many urban green spaces poses risks to students that this resource does not address.
- Sadly, in many communities instructors must train elementary students not to touch hypodermic needles that may be in bush areas or broken glass; usually the local HIV prevention group will come out to pick these up with Kevlar-armoured gloves. In rural Northern communities leather gloves and a rigid screw-top container such as an olive barrel may be used if there is no other service for needle pick up.
- As well, if it could get an edit to prune the elementary-level identity language like "play areas" but still to keep the reading level at an elementary level, it would be a strong contender for use with strong Gr.6 to Gr.10. Outside or Outdoor Experiential Education programmes which must have a mapping focus. It is hard to see this being used above gr. 8 in its current format with elementary-level identity language.
- It is not inconceivable that this lesson could be turned inside out to be used in a school without greenspaces in order to advocate for a school greenspace. This might be a way out of the lesson's assumption that all schools have safe wild places close at hand.
